Abstract:
Fertility, self-fertility, pollen viability and quantity, and number of ovules were measured at 4 different dates after open-pollinations and selfings in 71 pineapple clones from the FLHOR germplasm collection.
Fertility was very variable but generally very low in A.Comosus. The wild species A.ananassoides, A.nanus, A. parguazensis, A.lucidus and A.bracteatus exhibited higher fertility.
Fertility was correlated with the logarithm of pollen viability (r=0.59) and with pollen quantity (r=0.71). It was not correlated with ovule number.
A comparison of cross- and self-fertility indicated that all genotypes were self-incompatible, except A.bracteatus var typicus clones.
As the proportion of aborted seeds was the same after self- and open-pollinations, there seemed to be no inbreeding effect at the zygotic and embryonic levels.
