This thesis focused on the individuality of Kim Hongdo(1745～?), who was a famous painter carried out functions a service for his king in the later Joseon Dynasty. On the key word, ‘Individuality’ which inconspicuous term to the majors who noticed on him, this thesis tried to dig into Kim’s individuality. As a individual, Kim Hongdo was a distinctive professional painter, and oriented the particular culture of literati so that distinguished himself from contemporary painters who servicing to royal clients. And he shared the enjoyment of loving the antiques, and possessed attainments of music or instrumental skills. These features reflected on his painting works. This thesis is required clarification of answer for the question: “What is an individuality?” Therefore, in the 2nd chapter, tried to distinguish ‘character’ and ‘individuality’ as priority, and further, in the sub-chapter, I embodied the ‘individual’ and make it to two sub-concepts: the disposition of the literati and loving the antiques and attainments of music or instrumental skills. Kim’s disposition of the literati pullulated after the encountering a teacher who was a great literati, calligrapher, and painter, Kang Sehwang(1713～1791). But there is no evidences to lighten his course for literatural growing. At the period between thirty and forty, it is clear that he had possessed a literatural accomplishments that shows some level where he was. In that period, he had many relationships with the literati. If he had been limited by his social status, he could not carried out a membership of the elegant gathering which popular among the literati of the later Joseon Dynasty. The dispositions to the antique and music were a representative feature of the literati in the East Asia, and Kim had it, too. He succeeded to embody those cultural tradition which make himself distinguished other professional painters. These appear to his images of himself in his painting works those include literal sonorant too. Kim’s individuality can not be limited ever. The cultural domain that he had and rejoiced shows us that the cultural moving of the late Joseon Dynasty.

이 논문은 조선시대(1392～1910)에 활동했던 화가 가운데 가장 유명하고 독보적인 성취를 이루었다고 평가받는 김홍도(金弘道, 1745～1805 혹은 1806)의 특수한 면모를 논했다. 이미 있는 평가에서 주목하지 않은 ‘個人性’을 키워드로 삼아, 김홍도의 개인성을 追究해 보았다. 個人으로서 김홍도는 동시대의 화원화가들과 달리 문인을 지향하는 취향이 선명했고, 당시 사대부들 사이에서 유행했던 好古 趣味를 공유하고 있었고 音律에까지 밝았던 예술가였다. 이런 면모는 그의 회화작품에서도 볼 수 있으며, 주목할 만하다. 김홍도의 개인성을 탐구하기 위하여 이 논문은 먼저 개인성의 개념을 규정하려고 했다. 2장에서 個性과 個人性을 구분하여 전자는 ’Character’임과 달리 후자를 ‘Individuality’로 한정지었다. 김홍도의 individuality는 세 가지 성향으로 구체화하는데, 하나는 ‘文人趣向’이며, 나머지는 ‘好古’와 ‘音律’이다. 이 논문에서는 전자에 소절 하나를 할애하였고, 뒤의 두 항목을 하나의 소절에서 다루었다. 김홍도의 문인취향은 어린 시절에 만난 성숙한 문인 강세황과의 인연에서 출발한 듯하나 정확한 학습과정을 알 수는 없다. 그러나 30대 시절을 지내면서 일정한 단계에 올랐다고 보아야 하는데, 40대가 된 이후 그의 활동이 당시의 문인들과 활발하게 교유하는 양상으로 나타나기 때문이다. 그가 단순한 화원이라는 직업에 국한되었다면 시를 주고 받거나, 악기를 연주하는 등, 문인들의 모임의 일원이 수행해야 할 퍼포먼스를 감당할 수 없었을 것이다. 그와 같은 양태는 그의 3,40대 작품들에 반영되어 나타나기도 한다. 好古는 김홍도가 당시의 여느 화원들과 매우 다른 취미를 가졌음을 보여준다. 17세기 이후 동아시아의 사대부들이 누렸던 閑事 가운데 옛것에 대한 취미는 대표적인 영역인데, 일개 화원이라고 그를 규정한다면 호고는 김홍도로서는 상상하기조차 어려운 취미였다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 그는 음악에 관한 조예와 함께 그 취미를 자기화한 것으로 보인다. 이는 자신의 이미지로 보이는 작품들이나, 음악적 여운을 느끼게 하는 작품들을 남긴 것에서 볼 수도 있다. 김홍도의 개인성은 그 개인에 국한될 수 없다. 그가 신분을 넘어 향유하거나 추구했던 문화적 영역은 그가 시대적 환경의 수혜자였음과 함께 당시 사회의 문화적 지향이 어떤 것인지도 보여주기 때문이다.
