In opdracht van Commissie Hoeksche Waard werd deelgebied 15b van het plan “Inrichting Oeverlanden Binnenbedijkte Maas” aan de Polderdijk in de gemeente Maasdam archeologisch begeleid. De grondwerkzaamheden betekenden een bedreiging van het bodemarchief. Deze begeleiding werd uitgevoerd van 13 tot 28 september 2007. De uitvoering en documentatie werd gevoerd conform de KNA versie 3.1.Het plangebied is gelegen in de Hoeksche Waard. In geologisch opzicht liggen de afzettingen van de voorlopers van Maas en Rijn hier op een diepte van 10 –NAP. Met het natter worden van het klimaat is de invloed van de zee toegenomen en zijn mariene afzettingen gevormd. Na het ontstaan van de kustduinen trad in het achterland veenvorming op. Dit wordt Hollandveen genoemd. In de Romeinse tijd is er sprake van rivieractiviteit, waarbij bewoning op de oeverwallen mogelijk wordt. Na afdamming van de Maasloop ontstaat de Binnenbedijkte Maas en behoren overstromingen tot het verleden. Grote delen van de omgeving worden dan ingepolderd, waarna het gebied voor bewoning en landbouwkundige doeleinden geschikt wordt.De vindplaatsen in de omgeving van het plangebied hadden vooral betrekking op bewoning en begravingen uit de Romeinse tijd. Direct ten zuidwesten van het plan-gebied werd een middeleeuws klooster vastgesteld. Op grond van het vooronderzoek werd een middelhoge verwachting uitgesproken voor het plangebied, waarbij met name bewoningssporen uit de Romeinse tijd tot de mogelijkheden behoorden.Het inrichtingsplan behelsde het gedeeltelijk afgraven van de bovengrond tot maximaal circa 1 meter onder het maaiveld. Hierbij werd een gevarieerde oeverzone van hogere en lagere delen gecreëerd. Het totale plangebied betrof een strook van circa 570 x 45 meter aan de westzijde van de Binnenbedijkte Maas.Bij de begeleiding werden noch vondsten noch sporen uit de Romeinse tijd aangetroffen. Tot de geringe archeologische sporen behoorde een puinbaan met baksteen-fragmenten die mogelijk in relatie gebracht konden worden met een middeleeuwse klooster. Verder werd er een negenpalige structuur gedocumenteerd die als schuilhut voor het vee geïnterpreteerd werd. In de nabijheid hiervan werden twee dierbegravingen gevonden. In het noordwestelijk deel van het plangebied werden mogelijke sporen waargenomen, die bij nader onderzoek als resten van oever-begroeiing moeten worden geduid.Vondsten werden voornamelijk geborgen uit de onderzijde van de bouwvoor en uit een gering aantal sporen. Hierbij vertegenwoordigde het aardewerk de grootste categorie. Bij een quick-scan kon het gehele complex in de 17de – 19de eeuw gedateerd worden, waarbij er geen onderscheid gemaakt kon worden tussen vondsten uit de bouwvoor en vondsten uit de sporen. Het geheel kon gerelateerd worden aan bebouwing die aan de Polderdijk heeft gelegen.Ondanks het geringe belang van de archeologische resultaten kon niet de conclusie getrokken worden dat het archeologische verwachtingsmodel voor de omgeving van het plangebied niet valide is. Aanbevolen werd om bij grondwerkzaamheden in de omgeving archeologisch onderzoek te laten uitvoeren.
