본 논문은 현재 대학로 연극 환경의 문제점을 분석하고 그것에 근거하여 바람직한 대학로 연극의 활성화 방안을 제시하기 위한 목적으로 연구되었다. 대학로는 공연 관련 단일 밀집 지역으로는 세계적으로 그 유래를 찾아볼 수가 없을 정도로 큰 규모를 자랑한다. 또한 인사동, 경복궁 등 인근 지역의 문화 자원, 즉 전통, 미술, 역사 등과 연계하여 도시 활성화 및 경제에도 기여하는 관광자원 벨트로 육성이 가능한 매우 큰 국가적 자산이다. 그러나 현재 지니고 있는 이점과 앞으로 융합 발전 가능성에도 불구하고, 대학로의 핵심 동력이라 할 수 있는 연극인, 민간 극단, 소극장의 위치는 매우 불안하고 위태로운 상태다. 심각한 것은 이를 인식하여 전문적·지속적인 개념을 지닌 연구를 통한 중‧장기적 발전계획 수립과 실천은 찾아보기 어려운 실정이다.
연구 결과, 대학로는 대형화‧상업화되어가는 공연의 추세에 따라 극단 체제가 붕괴되고, 소극장이 연쇄 몰락하고 있으며, 급기야 연극인 사이에 ‘탈 대학로’를 모색하고 있는 심각한 상황임을 알 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구자는 대학로 활성화 방안을 다음과 같이 도출해낼 수 있었다. 첫째, 대학로문화특구를 지정하여 단기적 관점에서 육성과 규제에 관한 시급한 조례 마련과 장기적 관점에서 대학로 창작과 문화 환경 조성을 위한 정책을 만들 것을 제안했다. 구체적으로 문화특구에 담길 조례안 중 시급한 육성 정책은 연극단체가 운영하는 소극장과 민간 극단의 지원 확대를, 규제 정책은 호객 행위를 법적으로 금지시키는 법안 마련을 제안했다. 대학로의 창작과 문화 환경을 조성하기 위한 공공사업 추진은 ‘연극의 거리’란 대학로의 정체성을 드러낼 수 있는 도시 환경적 설계와 대학로를 공연예술의 허브로 육성‧발전시킬 정책 수립을 제안했다. 둘째, 대학로 연극창작 지원센터 설립을 제안했다. 이 센터는 민간극단이 만든 작품의 디자인과 기획홍보마케팅을 컨설팅하는 거점 기관이 되어야 하며, 연극 관련 인력과 콘텐츠가 모이는 허브가 되어야 함을 제시했다. 셋째, 대학로 구성원간의 연계협력 강화를 제안했다. 이를 위해 대학로의 주요 구성원인 연극인과 상인 그리고 시민들이 상생할 수 있는 연계 콘텐츠 확충과 대학로에 진출해 있는 대학 캠퍼스의 역할을 강조했다.
This paper is intended as an investigation of the analysis of Daehak-ro play's problem and the preparation of activation plan. Daehak-ro boasts a worldwide unpreceded scale being the single concentration area in regard to performing. Not only that, Daehak-ro could be a more valuable national property; it could be the belt of tourist attractions contributing urban activation and economy linked nearby cultural resources, like Insa-dong, Gyeongbokgung Palace's tradition, fine arts, history, and so on. Although performing art confers benefit on emotional and physical richness and the possibility of conflation development in near future, the status of private theater companies, little theatres, theatrical people, namely the kernel power of Daehak-ro, are uneasy and risky. Even worse the dimension of state or local government's professional and continuos research to practise medium-and long-term growing plan are rare. The research result show that Daehak-ro alters enlargement, commercialization. Consequently, theater companies and little theatres collapse sequentially. Theatrical people, in the end, seek 'post-Daehakro or escaping-Daehakro'. There is no doubt that Daehak-ro is grave situations. In view of research, the following measures were obtained for activation plan of Daehak-ro: First, I suggest a policy designating Daehak-ro cultural zone to reflect situation and demand on the spot. To put ordinance precisely, it is necessarily that enlargement support for little theatres managing by virtue of theatrical groups and private companies, design of urban construction being well matched identity of Daehak-ro, namely, street of theater, prohibition on tout, medium-and long-term plan growing Daehak-ro for herb of performing arts, etc. Secondly, I suggest the support center of Daehak-ro for creative play. The support center means base designing and promoting performing arts by means of private companies. In addition, it must be herb to assemble manpower and content in regard to play. Thirdly, I suggest the reinforcement of connective corporation among the member of Daehak-ro. For this, I emphasis on expansion of linked contents for coexistence among main member of Daehak-ro, that is, theatrical people, merchants, and citizen. Not only that, the role of university campuses locating in Daehak-ro cannot be overemphasized.
