명말청초 중국 천주교사에 대한 연구는 마테오 리치와『천주실의』및 그의 적응주의적 선교 노선, 천주교와 유교의 관계에 대한 보유론적 天儒觀 등에 집중되어 왔는데, 이는 그의 적응주의적 선교 노선이 가져왔던 영향력이나 서학에 관련된 다양한 논변들이 대체로『천주실의』에 보이는 내용을 바탕으로 하고 있기 때문에 어쩌면 당연한 일이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 주로 청대 초기 漢人 입교자인 張星曜(1633 – ca.1715)의 眞敎 변론서인『天儒同異考』를 중심으로 하여 이 시기 천주교와 유교라는 두 신념 체계의 교류에서 보이는 융합과 갈등의 양상을 이해해보려 한다. 시기적으로 마테오 리치가 중국에서 활동하던 명대 말기로부터 약 한 세기가 지난 17세기에 초점을 맞추려는 이유는 바로 그 백 년 정도의 시간 동안 천주교 전교가 진행되면서 중국인 천주교 신자들의 전통에 대한 이해 및 새로운 천주교 신앙에 대한 태도에 의미 있는 변화가 있었으리라 생각하기 때문이다.
본고는 명말 천주교가 전래된 이후 백 년에 이르는 시간 동안 중국인 천주교 신자의 天儒觀에 어떠한 변화가 있었는지를 추적해보고, 이를 통하여 유교의 용어나 관념을 가지고 기독교를 전달하려는 ‘격의 기독교’ 로부터 ‘중국적 기독교’ 혹은 ‘유교적 기독교’로 변화해가는 양상을 탐구하고자 하는 시도다.
This paper aims to understand Confucian-Christian exchange of ideas and culture during the 17th century. Zhang Xingyao(張星曜, 1633 - after 1715), one of the most serious Chinese Christians of early Qing period, had very distinct self-identity as a Confucian literati. One of his greatest writings, Tianru Tongyikao(天儒同異考, Similarities and Differences between the Teaching of the Lord of Heaven and of the Confucian Literati) shows his efforts to harmonize between Confucianism and Christianism. In this text, he not only identifies Christianism as Confucian tradition, but also elucidates the properties of Christian faith. I think that his explanation of 3 stages of Christian-Confucian combination ― Linking the Teaching of the Lord with Confucianism(天敎合儒), Using the Teaching of the Lord as a complement to Confucianism(天敎補儒), Making the Teaching of the Lord transcend the Confucian ones(天敎超儒) ― can be said to be a meaningful exploration of Chinese Christianism. Chinese Christianism or Confucian Christianism is one of the most important tendencies since the 16th century, and today many scholars try to explore the possibilities of Confucian Christianity.
