This study is a design research for Saenghwal hanbok(生活韓服), which is hanbok that can be worn practically in an everyday setting, using jersey. Saenghwal hanbok emerged in the 1980’s and peaked in popularity during the 1990’s, then declined in the early 2000’s. Interest in Saenghwal hanbok rose again in 2010 among people in their 20’s and 30’s after hanbok brands that appealed to the young consumers appeared. In the past, hanbok was made with woven fabric composed of silk, cotton (綿), and linen (麻). The Saenghwal Hanbok is made with fabric composed of diverse synthetic fiber. In contemporary fashion, the jersey is the second most used material after woven fabric, and it is known for its elasticity, comfort, and productivity. Knit fabric, however, was not a commonly used material, and it was difficult to find it in Saenghwal Hanbok. In order to wear Saenghwal Hanbok as everyday clothing, various changes, such as design, function, and material, need to be made, and of these changes, using materials that are popular today can be an effective way to accomplish the feat. The study focused on the basic form of hanbok, chima (치마) and jeogori (저고리) for the scope of its design development. The end result was a total of 10 pieces (6 tops, 2 dresses, 2 bottoms). Each piece was designed as individual items to enhance the utilization of Saenghwal Hanbok in an everyday setting. These pieces can not only be mixed and matched with each other, but also with existing fashion items that most consumers already own or can be purchased easily at a store. In the past, the extreme modifications of Saenghwal Hanbok did not catch on as trends. However, changes that kept the characteristics of hanbok were received well. Therefore, this study proposed designs of Saenghwal Hanbok that maintained the characteristics of hanbok, and changed the materials used to make hanbok. The aim of this study is to contribute as a valuable source for future Saenghwal Hanbok designs.
