Golobic ABSTRACT A modulated porous layer coating is effective in enhancing the nucleate boiling curve and critical heat flux. This coating, which is defined as periodically non-uniform thickness, was made from 200 μm or 50 μm copper particles sintered to form protuberances of 1 mm height at distances of 0.5 mm or 1mm. With respect to a plain copper surface, the critical heat flux for saturated pool boiling in FC-72 with the use of modulated porous layer coatings, at a cluster cone height of 0.5 mm was greater by a factor of 1.34, and at a height of 1 mm it was greater by a factor of 2.23.
