Krakhmalny ABSTRACT Mophology of Prorocentrum cordatum (Ostf.) Dodge, the most abundant dinophyte species of the Sea of Azov, has been studied. We focused on general shape and dimensions of cells, structure of periflagellar area, microstructure of valve, and the arrangement of trichocystian pores and microspines. Morphological variability of species was determined. Comparison of P. cordatum with similar species (P. ponticus Krachmalny et Terenko, P. balticum (Lachm.) Loeblich) was carried out. The problem of identifying P. cordatum and P. minimum (Pavill.) Schiller is discussed. Original LM and SEM photographs illustrate paper.
