    ABSTRACT

The antioxidant and antitumor properties of cultured mycelium of the medicinal mushroom Volvariella volvacea (paddy straw mushroom) were investigated. An aqueous ethanolic extract of the mycelium showed marked hydroxyl radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation-inhibiting activities. The extract also showed significant DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power. The antitumor activity of the extract was determined using both the DLA cell line-induced solid tumor and EAC cell line-induced ascites tumor models in mice. The extract showed profound antitumor activity against both ascites and solid tumors. The results thus indicate that paddy straw mushroom mycelium possess significant antioxidant and antitumor properties. This finding suggests the potential therapeutic use of aqueous-ethanolic extracts of V. volvacea mycelium.
