    ABSTRACT

    It is presented a review of main results of the studies on the autochthonous bacteria in the marine environment with special reference to the enteric pathogens and indicator microorganisms for the recent 25 years (1977−2002). The principal sources of the bacteriological pollution of the seas, some environmental factors affecting survival of enteric bacteria in seawater, the role of the bottom sediments in the microbial safety of the coastal areas, relations between the enteric bacteria and aquatic organisms are considered.
