The article reviews principal issues of biosynthesis and metabolism of sterols in marine organisms. The influence of environmental factors, physiological significance of sterols, their functions and properties in marine organisms are considered. The interest in sterols of marine organisms is explained, in particular, by the possibility of their practical using as a raw material for obtaining economically important compounds.
