    ABSTRACT

The metal surface hardening by concentrated energy fluxes (laser or electron beams) is investigated in different countries all around the world. The methods of electron beams application in the atmosphere are of particular interest. Wide perspectives of electron beams technological application can be opened by their injection into gas at atmospheric pressure.
The results of steel samples surface hardening prolonged investigations are represented in this article. The investigations were carried out in two main directions: hardening of samples with complex surface and multipass hardening. The problem in first case is connected with the changing of distance between sample and beam injection point. The length of beam passage through the atmosphere changes, and the beam parameters in the treatment zone change accordingly. The investigation in this area is based upon treatment of wedge-shaped samples transported under beam with following metallografic tests of hardened parts.
Multipass treatment is accompanied by partial overlapping of treated layers. This effect leads to tempering of previously hardened surface part and local transverse heterogeneity of steel structure. The analysis of methods able to correct this effect is also carried out.
