Hill ABSTRACT Often not explicitly acknowledged, shape factors are important aspects in the treatment of many orthopedic disorders. Two specific areas are the trunk morphometry in people with spinal deformities and the contours of the stump when fitting lower limb prosthetic appliances. In both applications, the structures of interest are smooth and three dimensional, with few sharp features. This makes multiple comparisons of the shape and objective determination of significant change a challenging problem. The following article reviews the techniques used to measure trunk and stump shape and how they have developed with time to provide more comprehensive clinical information. The primary focus is on the torso morphometry in scoliosis.
