이 논문의 목적은 훈몽자회의 어휘 배열 구조를 분석하고, 학습서로서 이 문헌의 특성과 가치에 대하여 다시 논의할 필요가 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 훈몽자회는 총 3권으로 구성되어 있는데, 세부 분류 항목을 제시하고 각각 그에 속하는 어휘류를 분류하여 제시한 上, 中권과는 달리 下권은 ‘잡어(雜語)’라고 되어 있고, 수록 어휘도 上권, 中권의 전형적인 시소러스 체계에 꼭 들어맞지 않아 비체계적이라는 비판을 받기도 했다. 그러나 훈몽자회 수록 어휘의 어휘 배열 구조를 다시 살펴본 결과, 훈몽자회의 上, 中권이 어휘들을 계열적 관계에 의하여 분류한 일반적인 시소러스 체계의 어휘 학습서라면, 下권은 上, 中권을 보완하는 확장된 온톨로지 구조로 당시의 문화, 생활 양식, 가치관, 지식 구조가 반영되어 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 점을 고려할 때, 훈몽자회의 구조와 가치에 대한 일부 논의와 평가는 수정될 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lexical arrangement structure of Hunmongjahoe and reevaluate its value as a study book for Hunmongjahoe. The Hunmongjahoe consists of a total of 3 volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 provide detailed classification, but Volume 3 does not categorize in detail and is criticized for being unsystematic. However as a result of analyzing the vocabulary network of Hunmongjahoe, the 1st and 2nd volumes are the vocabulary study books as the typical thesaurus system in which the vocabulary is classified, and the 3rd volume functions as an extended ontology reflecting the lifestyle, values, and knowledge of the time. Considering this point, we need to reconsider the value of Hunmongjahoe as a study book.
