초록

The objective of this paper is to figure out the quantitative structures of the vocabularies of the modern Korean and Japanese. In order to accomplish the objective, I examine the parallel corpora of the literal and the colloquial styles. The main results are as follows:1) With regard to cumulative frequency, Korean and Japanese show quite a similar distribution in colloquial style, but some difference in literary style. Korean shows comparatively low cumulative frequency. 2) With regard to the composition of word origin, Korean and Japanese show more substantial differences in literary style than in colloquial style. In both colloquial and literary styles, Japanese has many native japanese words whereas Korean has many hybrid words. When it comes to styles, Korean has many sino-korean words in literary style whereas Japanese has many sino-japanese words in colloquial style. Also in literary style, Korean shows a trend of the increase of whole token because sino-korean words include high-frequency sino-korean words which has the characteristic of basic words like native japanese words in Japanese. 3) With regard to the composition of parts of speech, in both literary and colloquial styles, Japanese has comparatively many nouns, whereas Korean has comparatively many adjectives(verbs). This reflects the nominal-oriented structure of Japanese and the verbal-oriented structure of Korean.
