백석은 1930년대 우리 문학사에서 뛰어난 시인으로 평가받지만, 그는 공식적으로 발표한 최초의 작품을 비롯해 총 네 편의 소설을 썼다. 이 중에서 「마을의 유화」와 「닭을 채인 이야기」는 기존의 소설문법과는 변별되는 독특한 서사형식을 지니고 있어 각별히 주목된다. 「마을의 유화」는 추운 겨울 허름한 냉돌방에 방치되어 있는 거동이 불편한 노부부의 몸 상태와 몇 가지 거동을 다룬 작품이다. 백석은 노부부의 상태와 움직임을 단계적으로 장면화하여 매 장면마다 인물들의 대결을 조성하고 그러한 장면의 연쇄로 플롯을 만든다. 각 장면에서 조성되는 인물들의 대결은 묘사의 힘으로 이룩된다. 노부부의 상태와 움직임에 관련된 주변 배경과 사물들과 추상적 존재들, 즉, 겨울, 나이, 죽음, 구들장, 벽, 문, 섬돌, 양아들의 노부부 유기 등과 같은 것들이 모두 의인화되어 노부부와 대결을 벌이는 모습으로 묘사된다. 노부부의 상태와 움직임에 대한 묘사를 통해 노부부가 세상의 온갖 것들과 맞서 싸워 나가는 서사를 만들었다. 「닭을 채인 이야기」는 시골마을에 사는 시생이와 디펑영감의 닭을 둘러싸고 벌이는 복수극을 동화적으로 그린 작품이다. 이 작품은 디펑영감을 향한 시생이의 복수가 갈등의 근간이지만, 그 전개과정에선 시생이와 디펑영감네 닭들과의 길고 장황한 대결로, 또 여우와 거지할머니라는 엉뚱한 동물과 사람의 횡재로, 그리고 디펑영감과 족제비의 뜻하지 않은 갈등으로 나타난다. 이 작품은 두 인물 사이에서 벌어지는 갈등의 인과적 연결대신에 그 갈등의 과정에서 파생되는 또 다른 인물들의 갈등을 독립적으로 연결시키고 개별 서사에서 인물과 장면의 묘사를 중시하는 방식을 통해 협소한 단편소설의 형식 안에 광범위한 삶의 이치들을 담아냈다. 두 작품 모두 묘사를 서사 형식의 중요한 기법으로 삼았다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. 「마을의 유화」는 인물의 묘사로 서사를 구현하였고, 「닭을 채인 이야기」는 배경 묘사로 서사를 만드는가 하면, 인물의 묘사를 중심으로 한 장면묘사가 소설 구성에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 백석은 비유와 이미지를 통한 대상의 묘사에 치중하며 참신한 단편소설의 형식을 창조하였다. 백석이 이 소설의 발표 이후 곧 바로 시인이 길로 나아간 것은 묘사를 중시하고, 그에 뛰어난 솜씨를 보인 문학적 태도와 기질에서 비롯된 것이다. 이후 백석은 소설에 뿌리를 둔 그의 문학수련과 묘사솜씨를 바탕으로 시 장르에서도 '서사지향적인 시'라는 독창적인 시의 형식을 개척하여 우리 시의 지평을 크게 넓히게 된다.

Baek Seok is an outstanding poet of the 1930's in our history of contemporary literature. However, novel was the first piece of work he published and later he published three more. Among them, < Thee Story of the Village > and < The Story of a Stolen Chicken > have different narrative form distinguished from other existing Novel Grammer. < The Story of the Village > is a literary work that deals the condition of a an old couple stranded in a freezing room in a cold winter. Baek Seok portrays the condition and movements of the old couple in phased scenes in which he composes a confrontation between the characters and thus creates a plot by connecting those scenes. Baek Seok composes the confrontation through the technique of description in every scene. Backgrounds, objects and abstract beings, such as winter, age, death, flat stone, wall, door, which are associated with the condition and movements of the old couple are all personified into images that confront with the old couple. Through portrayal of the condition and movements of the old couple he forms narrative in which the old couple struggles with every existence in the world. This movingly showed how tough and difficult a life of the old couple is. < The Story of the Stolen Chicken > is a story that deals with the revenge play between a chicken owned by Sisang Old Man and a chicken owned by Dipyong Old man who both live in a country village. Though it is the revenge of the Sisang Old Man against the Dipyong Old Man that forms the basis of the whole conflict in this story, in the development process it is portrayed as a long and tedious confrontation between the two chickens, windfall between a preposterous animal and humans and conflicts between unexpected figures. Instead of focusing on the causal relations between the conflict among the two characters, this literary work independently connects the conflicts of another character which are derived from the original conflict and embodies the broad meaning of life within a narrow structure of a short story by focusing on the portrayal of the figures and scenes in individual narration. The theme of this work is respond of the weak toward the strong, opportunity of a windfall, false of physiognomy, inevitability of a coincidence and an unexpected outcome of an intended purpose. Baek Seok expanded the scope of a short story through the creation of a unique narrative structure.
