The purpose of this study was to explore the specific mechanism by which self-consciousness influences cognitive components of social anxiety. The current study examined whether self-compassion mediated the relation between self-consciousness and fear of negative evaluation. Participants were 341 university students who completed the Self-Consciousness Scale, Korean version of the Self-Compassion Scale and Brief version of the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale. The bootstrap analysis demonstrated that self-compassion mediates self-consciousness relating to fear of negative evaluation. Results indicate that the relations between private self-consciousness and fear of negative evaluation were fully mediated by self-compassion, and the relations between public self-consciousness and fear of negative evaluation were partially mediated by self-compassion. Finally, the limitations of this study and the suggestions for future researches were discussed.
