사행록은 사신 또는 그들의 수행원이 사행 노정에서의 견문과 체험을 기록한 것이다. 동아시아 보편성을 가진 기록문학이며, 경험한 소재를 대상으로 하는 문학이라는 의미를 지니고 있어 체험, 객관적 전달, 사실성을 핵심으로 하는 문학 작품군이다. 최현의 『조천일록』은 ‘문견사건’이라는 보고서로서의 공적 일기와 개인기록으로서의 사일기를 병렬적으로 배치하는 방식으로 기록하였다. 공적 일기는 중국지역을 배경으로 매일의 일정과 행적을 기록한 반면에 사적 일기는 중요한 행적을 중심으로 취사선택한 기록이다. 최현의 『조천일록』은 한시와 운율이 없는 비문학을 포함하고 있는 기록이지만, 현대에 이르러 문학의 영역에서 다루어지고 있다는 점에서 기록문학의 범주에 포함하고 있다. 최현은 노정에서의 견문한 문물이나 제도, 자연 풍경이나 풍습 등 경험과 견문의 대상을 세밀하게 관찰하고 건조하게 기록하였다. 공식적인 일정에 한정하여 기록하면서 주관적 감상이나 개인적인 성찰이 여타 사행록보다 적게 발견되지만, 이는 1608년의 시대적 상황에 영향을 받아서이다. 최현은 서장관으로서 중국의 정세를 파악하고 조정에 보고해야 할 임무가 있었고, 이러한 임무를 달성하기 위해 수집한 정보를 정확하게 사실적으로 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 위해 중국조정에서 발간한 통보는 물론 현장에서 직ㆍ간접으로 수집한 자료들을 활용하였다. 최현의 일기는 매우 사실적인 내용을 기록하고 있는데, 개인적 심회를 드러내기도 했다. 이러한 정서적인 표현 등은 󰡔조천일록󰡕을 기록문학으로 이해할 수 있는 근거를 제공해 주었다.

Envoys" records include the knowledge and experiences of envoys or their attendants acquired over the course of their journeys as envoys. It is a documentary literature reflecting the universality of East Asia; since it has the meaning of literature targeting the subject of experience, it is a literary group that focuses on experience, objective transmission, and realism. Choi, Hyun"s was recorded in the parallel arrangement of a public diary as a report called the “visiting case” and a private diary as a personal record. The public diary recorded daily schedules and activities in the background of a Chinese region, whereas the private diary comprised selective records centering on important activities. Choi, Hyun"s is a record containing Chinese poetry and non-literature without rhyme; however, it is included in the documentary literature category in the aspect that it is included in the field of literature in the modern era. CHOI, HYUN carefully observed and objectively recorded his knowledge of aspects such as civilizations and systems and natural landscapes and customs, which he had experienced during his journey. Since Hyun’s recording was limited to his official schedules, his work contains less subjective appreciation and personal reflection compared to the records of other envoys, which were influenced by the social situation of 1608. As the official in charge of recording (Seojanggwan), Choi, Hyun’s mission was to understand the situation in China at the time and report it to the court; he accurately and realistically analyzed the collected information to achieve the goals of this mission. To perform such analysis, he used the data collected both directly and indirectly in the field, as well as the notifications published by the Chinese court. The contents of Choi Hyun"s diary were mostly very realistic; however, he recorded his personal feelings in the diary, as well. These emotional expressions provided the basis for including in the documentary literature category.
