Abstract
The NA50 experiment at CERN SPS has studied charmonium production in Pb−Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon. According to the theoretical predictions the observation of the suppression of the J/ψ production yield is expected to be an unambiguous probe for a phase transition from ordinary nuclear matter towards a state in which quarks and gluons are deconfined.
