Each platelet is made up of an aluminum-oxygen-hydroxyl octahedral sheet sandwiched between two silicon-oxygen tetrahedral sheets (Jayaraman & Kumar, 2006). van der Waals interactions, between platelts, make them difficult to separate from each other.
