Densities have been measured for the monosaccharide (D-xylose, D-arabinose, D-glucose and D-galactose)–NaBr–water solutions at 298.15 K. These data have been used to calculate the apparent molar volumes of these saccharides ( V Φ,S) and NaBr ( V Φ,E) in the studied solutions. Infinite dilution apparent molar volumes, V Φ,S0 and V Φ,E0, have been evaluated. In addition, the standard transfer volumes, Δt V E0, of NaBr from water to aqueous monosaccharide solutions and Δt V S0, of monosaccharides from water to aqueous NaBr solutions have also been evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural interaction model. Volumetric interaction parameters for the NaBr–monosaccharide pairs in water are obtained and interpreted by the stereochemistry of the monosaccharide molecules. An empirical equation is proposed to correlate densities of the ternary solutions with molalities of two solutes.
