Abstract
The solution of incommensurately modulated structures is conveniently achieved by refinement in higher dimensional space. For such an exact, but abstract description of the structure a statistical analysis of the solution is proposed which yields a statistical short range model. This is based on commensurate approximations of different degrees of accuracy. The method is demonstrated on the modulated structure of NbTe4.
