Portlets are Java technology based web components, managed by a portlet container, that process requests and generate dynamic content. They are used by portals as pluggable user interface components that provide a presentation layer to Information Systems. After servlets portlets are the next step in web application programming, as they allow the integration of different applications into one consistent view for the end-user. They enable modular and user centric web applications and thus go beyond the servlet model where the web application is one monolithic block. In this article we present the JSR 168 Java Portlet Specification and explain its underlying concepts. We show a Portlet example and discuss how portlets interact with other Java technologies.

Portlets sind Web-Komponenten basierend auf Java Technologie, die von einem Portlet Container verwaltet werden, Anfragen entgegen nehmen und dynamische Antworten generieren. Portlets werden von Portalen als Benutzerschnittstellen-Bausteine benutzt, welche eine Präsentationsebene für Informationssysteme bereitstellen. Nach Servlets sind Portlets der nächste Schritt in der Web-Anwendungsprogrammierung, da sie eine Integration von verschiedenen Anwendungen in eine einzige, übergreifende Anwendung erlauben, welche dann dem Benutzer präsentiert wird. Portlets erlauben modulare und benutzerzentrierte Web-Anwendungen und gehen damit einen Schritt weiter als das Servlet Model, in welchem Web-Anwendungen als ein monolitischer Block realisiert sind. Dieser Artikel erläutert die JSR 168 Portlet Spezifikation und ihre zu Grunde liegenden Konzepte. Wir zeigen ein Beispiel für Portlets und erläutern, wie Portlets mit anderen Java Technologien interagieren.
