According to the molecular structure of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (P 31, a = b = 6.051(1), b = 15.118(2) A, V = 479.4 Å3,Z= 3, wR = 0.047) the corresponding carboxylate should be a good anionic oxygen tripod ligand for hard metal ions with a span of the coordinating oxygen atoms of about 2.7 A.
