Abstract
The article considers the question of how the Persians may have understood and interacted with the gods of the peoples making up their empire. It begins with a clarification of Persian religion in the Achaemenid period, moves on to consider the authority’s relations with local cults, the dedications by individual Persians to local deities and, finally, the behaviour of Persians entering the power sphere of non-Persian deities.
