9. Final but in northern Englishes

From the book Perspectives on Northern Englishes

  • Sylvie Hancil

Abstract

Final but has been the focus of attention in recent studies in American and Australian English. Now there is a need to examine other dialects of English. The purpose of this article is to provide a synchronic study of final but in northern British English by examining the Newcastle Electronic Corpus of Tyneside English and the spoken section of the Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech. After identifying the different meanings attributed to final but, the analysis focuses on how final but has been subjectified in the two regions and how the interactional forces are accounted for in terms of discourse strategy.
