The 2008 M6.9 Iwate-Miyagi Nairuku earthquake generated a reverse-fault surface rupture that was observed at the Aratozawa dam site area. This faulting reactivated a normal fault formed by late Miocene caldera collapse. The earthquake triggered numerous and voluminous landslides in the hanging wall of the fault, upstream of Aratozawa dam.
