Abstract: Based on the remote sensing and geo-statistical methods, the semivariogram and Kriging interpolation were used to fit the spatio-temporal pattern of groundwater depth in the study area for the period of 1987to 2008.Overlaying the corresponding land use and land cover change(LUCC) from remote sensing images,we analyzed the relationship between LUCC and the spatio-temporal variations of groundwater in the Dunhuang Oasis,Northwest China. The results show that, under a greater influence from human activities, the maximum autocorrelation distance increased significantly, suggesting the connectivity and vulnerability of groundwater was rising.Over the study period, areas of the farming, urban, and barren land had all increased, while the grassland had sharply deteriorated.Groundwater spatial changes and the LUCC had a certain response relationship, while the rising air temperate, increasing agricultural irrigation and expanding tourism had all resulted in increasing water consumption, decreasing groundwater recharge and taking most of the ecological water demand. This eventually caused the groundwater level to decline.
