Abstract: Objective To investigate the distribution changes of uterine natural killer cells( uNK cells) in the maternal- fetal interface in preeclampsia and its correlation with clinical symptoms. Methods The unique uNK cell marker,Dolichos biflorus agglutinin( DBA) lectin antibody, was applied for immunohistochemical staining, thus to localize uNK cells in the decidual and villous tissues of pregnant maternal- fetal interface. Results In normal pregnancy, uNK cell count of the deciduas in the late pregnancy was significantly reduced when compared with decidual samples in early pregnancy( P < 0. 01); and no uNK cell was observed in chorionic villi in late pregnancy. Compared with the deciduas of normal late pregnancy, decidual uNK cells count in the third trimester of preeclampsia patients was significantly increased( P < 0. 01). Furthermore,no uNK cell was observed in villi in preeclampsia or normal pregnancy in the third trimester. Lectin staining optical density of decidual uNK cell in the third trimester in preeclampsia was significantly positively correlated with mean arterial pressure( r = 0. 72,P = 0. 021),but not 24- hour urine protein( r = 0. 340,P = 0. 198). Conclusion The expression imbalance of preeclamptic decidual uNK cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, and correlate to the patient’s mean arterial pressure.
