Abstract: The contents of organic carbon in water-soluble substances(WSS),humic extracts(HE),humic acid(HA) and fulvic acid(FA) were determined by total organic carbon(TOC) analyzer, respectively,in comparison with the potassium dichromate oxidation method. The purpose of using TOC analyzer was to find a quick and effective way to determine the conditions and operational approach of soil extracts. The results indicate that TOC method is superior to potassium dichromate oxidation method in accuracy, because it is simpler and more accuracy with higher recovery. There is not significant difference in determining the same sample continuously, and the variation coefficient is less than 2% within the allowable range. The overnight carbon content changes from 0.0416% to 0.9050% with a little difference. Therefore,TOC analyzer is stable and repeatable enough to determine soil extracts.
