Abstract: Forty-nine sample plots were set up in the secondary Betula platyphylla forests in Maoershan Forest Farm of Shangzhi City,Heilongjiang Province to study the suitable site conditions for B.platyphylla in the region. The tree growth indexes and site factors for each plot were measured, and a dominant birch tree was selected for stem analysis. The relationships between the height growth of birch and site factors were quantitatively studied. Results show that slope position has the greatest influence on the height growth of birch, followed by slope aspect, topsoil depth and slope gradient. The suitable site conditions for the growth of birch trees are south facing slope, middle slope position, and deep soil in A horizon, while sites with lower slope position or flat landform(meadows and swamps)are unsuitable.
