Abstract: Objective: To study the effect of sodium tanshinoneⅡA sulfonate on mandibular distraction osteogenesis in rabbits.Methods: 12 big-eared Japanese rabbits were randomly divided into control group（n=6） and experimental group（n=6）.Unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis models were established.Since the end of the delay period,the rabbits of the experiment group were injected sodium tanshinoneⅡA sulfonate 3ml every day.2 control group rabbits and 2 experimental group rabbits were executed at different time points respectively（1week,4weeks,7weeks after consolidation）.The general observation,X-ray observations,histology examination and the bone histomorphometry study were performed.Results: The formation rate and the quality of experimental group were superior to those of the control group.The osteoblast of experimental group was more active and the bone trabeculae were more mature.The number of osteoblasts and the percentage of trabeculae area in the distraction gap showed distinct increase compared to the control group（P＜0.05）.Conclusion: Sodium tanshinoneⅡA sulfonate appeared to be able to accelerate bone formation of mandibular distraction osteogenesis in rabbits.
