Abstract

This Letter gives a general formula for the estimated error in the aerosol extinction coefficient at any range for any measured distribution of this quantity. This is an extension of the error analysis for aerosol extinction coefficients done by Klett1 who assumed a homogeneous atmosphere with uniform aerosol distribution and that done by Sasono and Nakane2 for a horizontal path in an atmosphere assumed to have a sinusoidally varying concentration of aerosol.
