Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers( PBDEs),a group of new type of persistent organic pollutants( POPs) with potential ecological risk, are now widely distributed in the environment and organisms. In this study, acute toxic test of BDE-209 on copepod Calanus sinicus was carried out to measure the 96 h-LC50. Results showed that the 96 h-LC50 of BDE-209 to C. sinicus was 1 432. 21 μg /L which belonged to highly toxic material. The response of three kinds of antioxidant enzymes: glutathione peroxidase( GPX),glutathione-S-transferase( GST) and glutathione reductase( GR) when exposed to different concentrations of BDE-209 for 48 and96 h were also investigated in the present study. BDE-209 could induce oxidative stress of C. sinicus and the enzymic activity of GPX,GST and GR in low-concentration( 20 μg /L) group rose with time increasing, reflecting responses of defense system to the stress. In the highconcentration group( 200 μg /L) the activity of GST and GR increased at the time of 96 h,while the activity of GPX was always lower than those of the control, showing the occurance of certain oxidative damage.
