Abstract: Objective:To study the influences of different b values and gradients on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of normal cervical cord of human beings and to investigate the optimal DTI techniques and the characteristics of diffusion and fractional anisotropy (FA).Methods:Twenty-five healthy volunteers were chosen,DTI of cervical cord were performed,with 6 and 25 directions of gradients and different b values (0、100、200、400、600、800、1000s/mm2),the images characteristics were compared and analyzed.Regions of interest (ROI) were measured at the level of C2C3 with relative wide cervical cord and at the level of C4-7 with relative narrow cervical cord and the ADC values、FA values as well as eigenvalue 1,2 and 3 were calculated respectively.Results:①As the other scanning parameters were not changed,no significant statistical differences of ADC value,FA value and eigenvalue 1,2,3 with 6 and 25 directions were existed at the corresponding positions (P>0.05).②With the increase of b values,the average quality index of cervical cord decreased (P<0.01),there were no significant statistical differences between the average quality index with b=100、200、400、600s/mm2 (P>0.05).The average quality index and signal-noise ratio (SNR) were not satisfactory as b value=1000s/mm2,yet significant statistical differences were assessed when b value=600s/mm2 compared with that of b=100、200、6002、800、1000s/mm2 (P<0.01).The SNR of b=600s/mm2 had no significant difference compared with b=400s/mm2 (P>0.05).③With the same scanning parameters,the ADC values and FA values measured at C4C7 level were slightly lower than those measured at C2C3 level (P<0.05),the eigenvalue 1> 2>3 (P<0.05).Conclusion:Using GE 1.5T superconductive MR unit,with b value=600s/mm2 and 6 directions,satisfactory DTI images of cervical cord could be obtained.Distinct fractional anisotropy of spinal cord could be observed and there are relatively high ADC values with the diffusion gradients parallel to the white matter tract.
