Abstract: Some scholars think that the Chinese character"即"in such combinations as"遂即,""便即,""乃 即,""虽即,""或即,""忽即"and "实即,"which were used Dunhuang transformation texts,is a suffix.By comprehensively comparing the intrinsic function of the character "即"and the usages of the above-mentioned combinations in Dunhuang documents, and by analogically analyzing other related combinations, the author comes to the conclusion that the character "即"in the aforesaid combinations gives chief play to the connective and emphatic functions as a conjunction and an adverb rather than a suffix used to make enough syllables.
