Abstract: Tess of the D’Urbervilles depicts the tragedy of a rural girl,which reveals in-depth the British society at that time,and strongly criticizes the bourgeois optimism and gives deepest sympathy to the oppressed working people.The heroine Tess is known as one of the most beautiful and fascinating image of women in the world cultural gallery.The pursuit spirit of her character and rebellious ideology indeed break the shackles of tradition and surpass the notion of the times.Thereby this work has a strong sense of anti-religious,anti-feudal ethics and anti-bourgeois connotation.
