Chen Wenjun;Shanghai International Studies University;Zhejiang International Studies University;

Abstract: Based on the assumption that sememe succession and relevance exists between sentences containing"yaru"and "teyaru", this paper attempts to provide a new approach to the classifications of sentences containing"teyaru"through an investigation of the differences in semantic orientation brought about by the differences of sememe conservation in the grammaticalization of sentences containing"teyaru". Specifically, the new approach goes beyond the traditional pragmatic classification based on benefactive vs non-benefactive distinction and targets a new classification on the basis of the meanings of"teyaru"and the differences in semantic orientation. Through a corpus study, the new approach examines the various structural features concerned and concludes with a description of the verb patterns preceding"teyaru"and their respective sentence structures.
