Abstract: Butyric acid bacteria is a kind of obligate anaerobic bacilli; butyric acid is the main metabolites of this probotic. Butyric acid bacteria can colonize in human intestine,to some extent has synergistic effect with lactic acid bacteria. It can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut,promote the absorption of nutrients,and improve the intestinal function,etc. In this paper we reviewed the advances in the researches on clinical application of butyric acid bacteria,especially expounded the correlation of butyric acid bacteria and intestinal function in the elderly. Some advices were also put forward for further researches on butyric acid bacteria to prevent and control senile chronic diseases such as diabetes,cardiovascular disease,Alzheimer’s disease,rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
