Abstract: Tb0. 3( Dy1- xPrx)0. 7Fe1. 96( 0≤x≤0.6) compound ingots and directionally solidified rod-shape samples were prepared by arc melting furnace and zone melting method with the guidance of seeds, respectively. For the ingot samples, the microstructure, composition distribution and magnetization( σ) were characterized by X-ray diffraction( XRD),scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy( SEM-EDS),vibrating sample magnetometer( VSM),respectively. While for the directionally solidified samples, the orientations and magnetostriction( λ) at low magnetic field were measured by XRD and standard resistance strain gauge method, respectively. The results revealed that the microstructure of compounds changed with Pr element addition. When x < 0. 3,the ma-trix of samples was mainly REFe2 phase with few rare earth-rich phases. When x = 0. 3,non-cubic phase REFe3 appeared. When x =0. 6,REFe3 phase became the matrix of the compound. The magnetization of samples decreased gradually from 71. 28 A·m2·kg- 1for x= 0. 1 to 13. 47 A·m2·kg- 1for x = 0. 6 due to the difference of phase composition content and their magnetic properties in the compounds. The orientation of rod-shape samples changed as Pr content increased, indicating that the directional solidification parameters of TbDyPrFe compounds should be adjusted according to the Pr content. The result of magnetostriction indicated that the samples remained excellent performance with the addition of Pr element. At a compressive stress of 2 MPa and a magnetic field of H = 80 kA·m- 1,the λ reached 483.2 ×10- 6for x = 0. 1. However, with the increase of Pr content, the λ of samples decreased due to the change of lattice constant and phase composition of compounds.
