Abstract: AIM To determine the alterations in arterial reactivity of basilar arteries and small mesenteric arteries in rat models under hyperthyroidism established by Euthyrox containing L-T4.METHODS Sixteen male SD rats of body weight about 350g were randomly divided into the hyperthyroid group(n=8) and the control group(n=8).After 25 days’ administration of Euthyrox in the hyperthyroid group, arterial rings from basilar arteries and small mesenteric arteries of rats were isolated and effects of hyperthyroidism on arterial responsiveness were examined in vitro.RSEULTS The isometric contractile tensions evoked by KCl(10~100 mmol/L)and phenylephrine(PE)(10-9~10-4 mol/L) were significantly lower in basilar and mesenteric branch arterial rings from hyperthyroid rats compared with those of controls(P<0.05).The vasodilator response induced by acetylcholine(ACh)(10-9~10-4 mol/L) significantly increased in the hyperthyroid group(P<0.05).But the differences of dilatory responses of those arterial rings induced by sodium nitroprusside(SNP)(10-9 ~10-4 mol/L) between the two groups were not significant. The sensitivities of those arterial rings to KCl and ACh were significantly enhanced by hyperthyroid(P<0.05),whereas the sensitivity to PE and SNP did not show any significant differences between the two groups.CONCLUSION Hyperthyroidism may result in depressed ability of smooth muscles to develop tension and increased endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in basilar arteries and small mesenteric arteries.
