Abstract: AIM: To investigate effects of diethyl-2,6diethyl-4-furny-l, 4-dihydropyridine-3, 5- dicarboxylate (EFDP) on proliferation of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs) stimulated by angiotension II(Ang II). METHODS: The rabbit VSMCs were cultured and the inhibitory effect of EFDP on DNA synthesis in vascular smooth muscle cells stimulated by Ang II were assayed at different times with different concentrations of EFDP by using 3H-TdR incorporation in vitro. RESULTS: Ang II could significantly promote DNA synthesis in quiescent rabbit VSMCs, with a maximal response at 36th h. EFDP significantly inhibited DNA synthesis of VSMCs in a dose-dependent manner, with a maximal response at a concentration of 78.40 μmol/L and at 36th h when the inhibitory rate was 21.37%. CONCLUSION: EFDP significantly inhibits DNA synthesis of ribbit VSMCs induced by Ang II in a dose and time dependent manner.
