Abstract

This article analyses the linguistic landscape inside the Occitan minority of Guardia Piemontese, in Calabria. In particular, the results of linguistic fieldwork will be set out to test the degree of vitality of the alloglot language. The progressive coexistence of Guardiolo with the Italian/Calabrian sociolinguistics reality and increasing language contact, have been the main causes of variation phenomena that have affected Guardia Piemontese. Through the analysis of a speech corpus, a series of morphosyntactic and lexical elements that appear to be the most significant in the minority language’s maintenance will be presented, in order to reveal forms of conservation, contamination and change in phono-morphological and syntactic structure, and in the training and consistency of the lexicon. The main aim is, therefore, to establish in a medium to long-term perspective, the chances of survival of the Occitan variety of Guardia Piemontese (Guardiolo).
