The distribution of 3-O-acetyloleanolic acid, oleanolic acid, and hederagenin in Clematis and Akebia spp. was studied. These were isolated from the roots of C. uncinata var. ovatifolia, C. apiifolia, and C. apiifolia var. biternata. Oleanolic acid and hederagenin were isolated from the roots of C. terniflora and C. japonica, and the stems of A. quinata, A. trifoliata, and A. longeracemora, and also from the roots of C. patens, Madame Van Houtte, C. stans, and C. stans var. austrojaponensis. The stem of A. quinata contained stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, betulin, β-sitosterol β-D-glucoside, myo-inositol, and sucrose. Stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, and β-sitosterol β-D-glucoside were isolated from the root of A. quinata, and from the root and stem of A. trifoliata.
