the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles based on oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions (Sanchez-Dominguez et al. 2009), in contrast to the typically used water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion reaction method (Boutonnet et al. 1982; Destrée and Nagy 2006; Eastoe et al. 2006). The aim of this chapter is to discuss our recent developments about the use of O/W microemulsions as confined reaction media for the synthesis of pure cerium oxide nanoparticles, as well as the synthesis of Eu-doped cerium oxide. In addition, the preparation of Au-impregnated cerium oxide and its use in the catalytic oxidation of CO is also discussed.
