ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6, technical opinion of authorities on concrete are written. Professor Adam Neville said that seawater should not generally be used for mixing concrete, but there are two exceptions: 1) in a completely dry state and 2) within seawater or completely immersed in water. Professor Yuzo Akatsuka said that although the use of seawater for mixing cannot be encouraged, there appears to be no reason for absolute prohibition either. Using seawater in concrete, both as mixing water and curing water, is feasible as long as certain practices are followed. In some cases, it can even be advantageous. The approach to the use of seawater should be to focus on ways to make such use possible. That attitude would be "Where there’s a will, there’s a way". It should be stressed that our fundamental knowledge in concrete engineering must be applied to seawater concrete correctly as described in this book.
