ABSTRACT

Ionic liquids have been developed to be used in different industrial applications for several decades ago, starting from ethanol ammonium nitrate in the early publications. Today, ionic liquids have been proposed to play roles as the green solvents due to their low toxicity, low corrosive, low vapor pressure, high flash point, and recyclable. Due to other functionalities, especially electro-conductivity and polarity, ionic liquids were applied in the development of advanced biocomposite materials. As the solvents with good selectivity and high solubility, ionic liquids were extensively used to extract the targeted macro-polymeric biomolecules from natural biomass and incorporated to biopolymers with petroleum-derived polymers, other natural polymers, and metals to achieve an array of applications in different downstream industries. Ionic liquids nowadays are become one of the tailor-made chemicals and designed based on the inventors on a commercial scale. The details of the composition of ionic liquids related to their properties are discussed here to provide an idea for process development of composite fabrications and manufacturers.
