ABSTRACT

This study seeks to investigate the retention rate of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Intrinsic Motivation. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the primary data and analyzed using Smart-PLS. The result of the study indicates that successful completion of MOOCs is predictable largely through the level of EI of the learner. As it was found that the grouping of EI and intrinsic motivation served as a stronger interpreter of completion of online courses. In this study, EI was used as a mediator for analyzing the impact of intrinsic motivation on successful completion of MOOCs. The present study identified the significant relationship between intrinsic motivation, EI, and successful completion of MOOCs but it is not conclusive. The mediation effect of EI provides a basis to further explore the role of EI in the continuously growing online learning ecosystem.
