ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the fundamentals of explosion protection, the safety regulations and the steps to set up a concept for an explosion protection for landfill gas collection and utilization plants are presented. The Land Hessen set up a programme to support financially these new technologies for LFG; it was mandatory to evaluate their operation and emissions on the basis of a monitoring programme. The monitoring of landfill gas and gas burner emissions was carried out by Biogas Systems GmbH, Giessen. The programme investigated muffle furnaces with and without heat recovery, and gas engine emissions with and without afterburning in a muffle furnace. Afterburning the exhaust gases from lean-gas engines in muffle furnaces reduced CO emissions to 4% of the initial levels. The results from the test programme showed that landfill gas treatment plants require differentiated examination regarding the minimization of pollutant emissions in the exhaust gases.
