ABSTRACT

Biosorption is a technique that has been widely studied for dye removal. Biosorption is, in general, the removal of a substance from aqueous solutions by biological materials and may include several mechanisms, such as ion exchange, adsorption, complexation and precipitation. Dyes are colored compounds that are used to color a product generally to increase its visibility in the market, improving its appearance and attractiveness to the consumers. Bioaccumulation occurs in living biomass as bacteria and biosorption takes place mostly in non-living biomass as agricultural waste among others. Absorption phenomenon occurs when the substance to be sorbed is incorporated into another of different physical state. Biosorption is an adsorption process that occurs in a biomaterial. The predominant mechanism of biosorption consists in a physicochemical process of ion exchange between functional groups present in the biomass with molecules or ionic species in the pollutant.
